| The following is a true story from Sean B. of Nottingham. He had a bit of a disaster with his bhuna kit but learnt from the experience and had a good night anyway.
"When I first came across the Bhuna Curry Kit I was amazed on how easy they made it sound but as a lover of curry and wanting to impress my mates with my cooking skills I thought I would give it a go. I choose the Bhuna curry kit because it isn’t a strong curry but it isn’t weak either.
So I placed my order for the Bhuna curry kit and as promised I received it a couple of days later, When the package arrived I remember one thing that thing is when I opened all the packaging there was a smell of fresh herbs and spices that you don’t get from all those ready made packets you buy from a supermarket.
Upon reading through the step by step guide on, on making the Bhuna curry I was even more surprised to find that all the claims of how easy it was to make was actually true. There instructions was very clear and simply to understand. It also had all the ingredients listed that I needed to make the Bhuna curry.
I was now armed with all the ingredients to cook a great Bhuna curry and it felt good making a curry from scratch and knowing exactly what was going into the curry unlike my normal method of buying a jar or tin of ready made stuff that never does taste or look like it said it should and especially not as good as the Indian you get from your local.
All I need to now is to invite some mates round and make sure they bring the important stuff, The Booze. With the booze and this simply curry kit the night is sure to be a success.
Few days later they all turned up as arranged with the booze. I had a few drinks with everyone before I started to cook the curry. Then I made my exit into the kitchen to cook the Bhuna curry.
I was totally impressed with the simplicity of the way things just went together. All the packets of spices and herbs all had numbers on the packets and the instructions told you what number to put in the saucepan and when. It was like cooking by numbers, Even I couldn’t mess this up.
Well that is what I thought.
I made a few mistakes that made everything go slightly pear shaped. One mistake was getting drunk before cooking and the second was not following the instructions exactly (probably because I was drunk), it told me to add a little bit of the chilli powder at a time until you reach the correct strength you want for your curry but I decided to save time and throw in half of the bag then taste and add more if necessary but gosh that was a mistake, This curry was HOT. (Note: We put more chilli powder than most people would normally use just in case you do like it hot – remember you can add it but you can’t take it out so always a little at a time)
Still slightly worried about what they will say about the extremely hot curry, I left the rice cooking to long and it ended up soft and soggy and I thought that’s it I have ruined it, but if anything these mistakes did two things for me.
One I realised what not to do next time and the second thing it did was make the night a good laugh. As you will see later.
I dished up the curry and shouted for them to eat. They all came in and sat down and all commented on how well it looked and smelt. But I knew that would all change once they tucked in because of those stupid mistakes.
This is the point where the night turned into a good night. They were all eating it but I could tell they was just eating it to be kind, I could see them sweating buckets and drinking gallons of cold beer. Then one made a sarcastic comment about curry and rice pudding being a good combination, because I left the rice cooking for so long it did look like rice pudding. Then all the comments on how hot it was come out and every one was laughing and joking about it.
There I was laughing and joking with them taking the Mick out of my curry but I wasn’t that bothered because everyone was having a good time and I knew the mistakes I made.
I will definitely be ordering another one but I will make sure I follow the instructions next time.
On the whole things were simple and went to plan apart from the two mistakes that I won’t make next time. It created the same look and smell of my local Indian but was a hell of a lot spicier, I don’t know how they managed to eat as much as they did."
